hey returning members. its time for a classroom workday. Friday July 28th at 12:30 p.m. please eat first and come prepared to work.
i tried to send an email, but many of people's addresses have gotten eaten by a random black hole or cyber space. no one seems to check this, but thought I'd give it a shot. If you did get the email or happen to see this message please pass it on.
Current Mood: working
Current Music: the t.v...
If you're an extemper, you'll get this.
I'm going to keep the name anonymous for the sake of privacy, but it's obvious that Arizona Extemp lost a skilled caoch, as well as one of its best judges, last Thursday. My condolences to all Extempers and LDers who will never have the relief of being judged by such a "good" judge, or reading his wonderfully on-the-mark Extemp prompts.

As we are all well aware, the National Qualifier tournament is just around the corner, which means tensions are mounting to an all-time high. The Qualifier isn’t just a last tournament for many of us (whether it be the last of a career or just a singular year) it’s the tournament that forms the Arizona team for Nationals. Certainly everyone wants to qualify, but that can’t happen for everyone. We can work together as a circuit, however, to ensure that this does happen.
Please be aware of what your school’s current strength is. This is what determines how many students can go to the qualifier from your school. Note that this does NOT include congress entries. The District Tournament Manual from 2006 indicates that if your current strength (degrees and members) falls between 81 and 90, then you can take 19 entries to the district tournament. If you utilize what I like to call the ‘bonus entries clause’ then you can actually take 36 entries to the tournament. Here’s how that works:
Spread your 19 entries evenly between all events offered at the qualifier. Barring the one extra, you should now have two entries in each event (duo events count as one entry per team). As per the ‘bonus entries clause’, if the two teams you have entered compete in at least one round at the tournament, you’re able to enter up to four entries in each event. Please double check this with your coaches, but as far as I’ve read the manual, that’s how it works.
Why is this important? If all schools that are able to utilize this clause to take full slates in all events, we can qualify more students in each event. Generally duo,, drama, and humor are the events that receive the most “fillers”—people going to help make sure that 3 (or 4) qualify in the event. Why not take advantage of this clause and send at least 58 entries in EACH event to the tournament—thus producing the largest (and most nationally competitive) team from the AZ circuit? It’s worth a try, guys!
PLEASE, send full slates! Send fillers in events like domestic extemp, foreign extemp, oratory, and policy! These events need the most help to get to their maximum qualifier levels:
Speech, and L/D
4-11 entrants - 1 qualifier
12-37 entrants - 2 qualifiers
38--57 entrants - 3 qualifiers
58+ entrants - 4 qualifiers
Team Debate and Duo
4-9 Teams - 1 qualifier
10-29 Teams - 2 qualifiers
30-49 Teams - 3 qualifiers
50+ Teams - 4 qualifiers
This is our chance to show the national circuit what we’ve got! Pester your coaches, enter your points, and take full slates if you can! Don’t be embarrassed about taking a filler, because they help the state in the long run anyway.
I can assure you that Dobson will be taking a full slate. Is anybody with me?

It's Jessica. Again.|
Sorry to those people who were actually looking forward to seeing me again or even meeting me the first time at Winter Trophy. My coaches cut it from our schedule. There was not much rejoicing.
Anyway.. Who is going to Toro, and what are you competing in? I'm just a little curious now.
Oh, and I am doing:
Prose, Drama, *maybe*LD and Congress
|» how sweet it is|
just saw 5a winter trophy results--good to see a TOC qualifer from 2005 couldn't get an above .500 record at an arizona tournament|
glad i graduated a year before arizona's legitimacy went completley down the toilet
|» Who am I?|
My name is Jennifer Himel. I am a speech and debater from Central. A sophomore. You probably don't even know who the heck I am. Last year I did Prose, PFD, storytelling, Humor and Extemp for Nat Quals. This year I'm doing prose and PFD, I'm not sure I'll do extemp much longer. I will also be picking up a Duo or Humor in the very near future. (you might know who I am if you saw my prose last year. It was the one about Nunga-Nungas)|

I bet none of you know who I am. Hah. I'm Aubree Hansen from Central.
I'm a sophomore.
Last year I did DI, Duo Interp, and I picked up PFD around Gilbert. This year I'm doing Duo Acting, DI, Congress, and PFD. I'll probably pick up an Oratory or an Interp later. If you still have no clue who I am, you've probably seen me tagging along with my Duo and PFD partner (and my significant other) Colton Shone.
God, I'm such a trend follower.
